FWISD Jean McClung Middle School
Fort Worth, Texas
The Jean McClung Middle School was constructed by Fort Worth ISD on a site that once housed an older school building (Handley High School) in the historic Handley neighborhood. The $34 million school sits on 12-acres, is 162,000 SF, and serves approximately 910 students in grades six through eight. It has 26 classrooms including science and computer labs. Instructional areas are devoted to art, music, drama, life skills, and career guidance. Jean McClung Middle School boasts two gymnasiums, a weight and fitness area, and an outdoor athletic field. It was designed to retain the many established trees. The challenges for our site design included significant elevation change across the site and older and undersized neighborhood utility and drainage infrastructure. The drainage design included a system of detention basins to slow the release of storm water.
